Why are barns traditionally painted red?

I heard this on the radio a while back and thought it was interesting! Barns are traditionally painted red to absorb the daylight/heat and keep it warm at night. Back in the "olden days," they didn't have a heat source since a fire could burn it down, so they painted their barns red using skim milk and rust. Interesting, huh?
